Meeting with new and potential clients is a bit like being matched with a new dance partner. Whether you're from the old school or the 21st century school of dance, there's always some kinks to be worked out. Stick with me as we two-step through this post...
When shooting with a new subject, there’s a get-to-know-you phase and the usual song and dance (pun intended) with many commonly asked questions. While the steps of the dance will vary depending on the partner, the rhythm, pace and product never change. My job is to keep time, gain your confidence and deliver a product worthy of the highest praise from any dancefloor critic!
In lead up to our initial meeting, I have listed the most commonly asked questions and their answers. Reviewing these will help you become a more confident dance partner. Although I promise not to force you, if busting your favorite moves in front of the camera is your jam, by all means let loose! It wouldn't be the first time my subject has gotten their groove on during a shoot.
How long will it take? Time is certainly an important factor that’s considered during a shoot. Both your and my time is valuable and I strive to make the most of it. I won’t spill all my time-saving tips in this post but will assure you that as much preparation and set up will be done in advance of you arriving on set. While I can’t pinpoint an exact length of time for your shoot, expect to be with me for a minimum of 20 minutes for a headshot, longer if we’re shooting multiple angles or setups. So many factors are considered during a shoot including lighting, wardrobe, makeup, etc. I want to produce the best image for you so if that takes longer, all I ask for is some patience and a smile!
How should I look? I cover this topic at greater lengths in a previous blog entry but here’s the gist: Stick to clean clothes (this may require a trip to the dry cleaner or busting out your iron to press your favourite blouse or button up), tidy and clean hair, your go-to makeup and accessories. I usually have a bag of “tools” on set that can manage the common flyaway, shiny foreheads and the like. If you’re still unsure of how to present yourself, bring options! There's no harm in applying a fresh coat of lipstick or changing shirts at the last minute.
I hate having my picture taken and I don’t have a good angle. Less of a question, more of a concern, but it’s one I hear on the regular. The first step? Harness your inner confidence! Next, rest assured because you DO have a good angle and I am bound and determined to discover it during our “dance”! I’m about to go Oprah on you for a second; if there’s something that inspires your authentic self, bring it. A favorite quote, a good luck charm, an inspiring song or playlist, crystals, sage… if it will help you relax in front of the lens, I’m game. During my years as a portrait photographer you’d be surprised at the things I’ve seen people bring to combat bad juju!
