Hiring A Photo Agency vs Independent Photographer- Top Toronto Corporate Headshot And Event Photographer
In today’s entry, I’m going to illustrate some of the common differences and misconceptions with hiring a photographer directly vs. enlisting the services of an agency.
When working with a photography agency, it’s a bit of a gamble. You can never be sure that the work they showcase is what you’ll receive as they have a rotating roster of (sometimes mediocre) photographers. These are often novice photographers looking to build their portfolios that haven’t gained significant experience to execute large scale events, corporate headshots, etc. Is this someone you want interfacing with executives at your next event? I’m all for learning and growing but there’s also a time and place.
When working directly with a photographer, you’re certain that the work you see in their portfolio was planned, shot and edited by them. Here at Liz Caruana Photography I don’t have a big team of production assistants, location scouts, post-production editors, etc. What you see is what you get and I take great pride in each step of production. I have a name and reputation to uphold, whereas agencies can turn and burn their photographers on a whim.
An additional advantage to working directly with a photographer is that you liaise directly with the person responsible for your shoot. No middleman / middlewoman, no accounting department, no secretaries means no detail will fall through the cracks.
It’s also important to note that photographers employed by agencies aren’t often committed to their craft full time. It may be one of several side gigs which means they’re likely not up to speed on their training, equipment, etc. These photographers are compensated accordingly and there’s no transparency from the agency about the breakdown of your fees. Avoid overhead by working directly with a photographer.
