New Year Reflections for your best year yet, Top San Francisco Corporate Headshot and Event Photographer

The end of a calendar year and start of a new one is a natural time to reflect on the past year. 2018 was full of lessons learned (link to work-life blog), moments of pride (humble brag!) and new relationships cultivated while old ones were fostered. Here are some of the stand-out highlights from 2018:

  1. Speaking of cultivating relationships, working with new clients is something that fills this photographer’s bucket to the brim! Orbis Investment Management was a new client to me in 2018 and not only was I able to photograph them at the top of the iconic Transamerica building (a dream location!), I also put my problem solving skills to the test by shooting on a white background and flipping it to blue. Not to mention, the slanted ceilings of their space provided an additional challenge that I was thrilled to rise to (pun intended!). <insert photo from shoot>.

  2. Another new-to-me and great client was Alpine Investors. Their fabulous Marketing Director enlisted me to revamp their portraits in the style of a Vogue or Vanity Fair shoot; a challenge right up my alley as some of those renowned portrait photographers have served as my muse over the years. Final Alpine portraits are still in review but I’ll be sure to share them on my website once they’re approved.

  3. Rounding out my list of highlights was the news that I was accepted as a Personal Brand Photographer on my mentor’s vetted list! Bear with me as I humble brag for a minute because this is a BIG FREAKING DEAL!  Jamie Swanson is a powerhouse in the field of business and personal brand photography and I have been following, admiring and learning from her for years. Her screening process for mentorship is rigorous. She evaluates not just the body of work from an applicant, but skill level, communication abilities and more. She is highly respected in her field and it is an absolute honour to be accepted as a mentee, among the ranks of some incredible photographers. To say I’m looking forward to what this year has to bring in terms of learning and growing under Jamie would be an understatement! Stay tuned for more as our mentor/mentee relationship grows throughout this year.

There you have it. Another year in the books and a great one at that. What are some of the things you’re celebrating from the past year? If you haven’t taken a moment to reflect, I encourage you to do so. It’s a great exercise and is valuable when it comes to goal-mapping for the upcoming year. I’m looking forward to adding to the tools in my kit, learning from the best in the game and meeting new clients as well as connecting with old ones. As always, I’m grateful for the support of my clients this past year. If we haven’t yet worked together, contact me today and perhaps you’ll be on my list of 2019 highlights!

Reaching Your Fitness Goals - from a top San Francisco Lifestyle Fashion and Sports Fitness Fashion Photographer

san francisco lifestyle and sports fitness photography liz carua

Evan Sanders is a pretty amazing guy. His day job is with an industrial design company, but he is the creator and author of The Better Man Project, a website dedicated to inspiring both himself and those that follow it.

In Early January of this year Evan approached me to photograph him at a pinnacle day in his fitness training. Evan had been training for months sculpting his body to get the exact physique he desired. He knew that January 31, 2015 was a special day for him. This was the day where he would be at peak fitness and would be the most optimal day for him to be photographed. As a running coach I can honestly say how proud I am of him for getting to his goal day, and getting to it naturally without the assistance of drugs. His final week he had to do a dry out period where he drank gallons and gallons of water, and then had to drastically reduce it to almost none so that his muscles were as defined as they could be. He even brought a special pre photoshoot drink and resistance ropes with him so that every muscle was looking their best.

Evan and I planned out the look and feel of his shoot together, deciding on photos that we thought would best represent his vision of himself and how he wanted to project himself. We chose clothing that fit the location and he even brought an American Flag with him. I was pretty excited to see that surprise as I had always wanted to do a shoot with an American Flag and was stoked to be able to do a shoot that was really appropriate to show his pride in his accomplishments.

Take a look at the highlights from this shoot below. Congratulations Evan!! What an amazing accomplishment.

Men's Look Book Photoshoot - From a top San Francisco Lifestyle Fashion and Sports Fitness Fashion Photographer

I love Look Book Shoots!!!!! I'm serious. They are so so so much fun!!! If you know me, you know I'm really in my element in the studio where I get to help a client create images of the designs they've worked so many hours on.

Frequently you'll see women's lookbooks, but I really enjoy the men's lookbooks as there is more a challenge with them. Posing a man like a high fashion model is not appropriate for a look book, so you really need to be able to connect with the model immediately and get great expressions, and flattering poses that show off the clothing. Check out the images below or my entire studio portfolio to see examples of the work I do with my clients.

Inquire today about your shoot.

Golden Gate Park Running Photoshoot - from a top san francisco lifestyle fashion and sports fitness fashion photographer

My shoot with Leija from SCOUT was pretty spectacular. Little did she know she was going to be jumping, bounding and leaping all over Golden Gate park when she arrived for her fitting and hair and make up prior to our shoot. top-san-francisco-lifestyle-fashion-and-sports-fitness-fashion-photographer-lizcaruana

Our day was a grey, overcast San Francisco day, however, the images we created were full of lush and vibrant color as stylist Nicole Busch of Nicole Blair Wear pulled some of the most fabulous clothing to compliment our scenery. My hair and make up artist was the talented Tacha Scott Santana the owner of Dream Girl Make Up Institute.

For this shoot I wanted to create images of a runner, but not in the usual fashion. I didn't want to just track a runner and fire away. I wanted to do something different. So for this shoot I had Leija jump over top of me while I layed on the ground. This resulted in fantastic images. Other times I had her bounding over logs so that you could see real exertion and true expression while running. One of my favourite photos is of Leija running next to a late with the tall trees in the background. I feel it reflects her long lean figure and stride.

I couldn't do the shoots that I do without my fantastic team and am greatful for all the help and collaboration they provide on the shoots. Thanks so much ladies! You're the best!

How to enjoy a relaxing weekend - from a top san francisco lifestyle fashion and sports fitness fashion photographer

If you ever what I dream about at night, I'll tell you. It's running up and down the mountains of the Marin Headlands. This is what I consider relaxing on the weekend. Running or hiking the hills of Marin. top-san-francisco-lifestyle-fashion-and-sports-fitness-fashion-photographer-lizcaruana

As a marathon runner myself, training on the streets can be pretty exhausting, but when you give yourself that break to get out on the trails, it's like you've refreshed your entire running perspective. I'm a huge advocate for running, fitness, and sports. In fact each year I run at least one marathon and one half marathon. More if I can fit it into my schedule for training. I love running so much that my husband and I even went on a mini break to run from our home in San Francisco to the Pelican Inn in the Marin Headlands. It was only a 14 mile run, but up and down the trails made it to be quite the adventure. I didn't bring my camera on that run, but I did photograph the lovely Therese from Stars Model Management to show you just how beautiful this part of Northern California is. My stylist for this shoot was Ana Dalman of Melange Mode and Olga was my hair and make up artist was. Ana did a spectacular job picking out Therese's clothing to stand out perfectly from the background and compliment the motion she was performing. Olga was on the ready fix any fly always and touch up any shine as both are so common on a sports fitness shoot.

How to stay motivated to exercise - from a top san francisco lifestyle fashion and sports fitness fashion photographer

You've heard it all before I'm sure. You need to exercise every day to stay healthy. Well, what if it's just too hard for you to do that on your own.

top-san-francisco-lifestyle-fashion-and-sports-fitness-fashion-photographer-lizcaruana

The answer is easy. Exercise with a friend, or a group. For years I used to run on my own. Mile after lonely mile I would run the streets of San Francisco in preparation for my races either here or other cities. After a while I wondered if I could learn more and get better if I trained with a group. Five years ago I joined the San Francisco Marathon Training program and learned quickly that training with a group of other people is possibly the best way to stay fit and stay motivated to keep running. Having a goal of a race that you are all training for together really is a no brainer. I'd been a cross country runner in high school and after a year in the program I learned so much that the following years I've been a pacer for new trainees in the group. Here I help runners learn how to properly train for a marathon and to know what to do about injuries and maintain good health throughout the training process. I can honestly say that there has been no better way for me to keep running than to sign up for a race and run with my group. The camaraderie and support you get from a group is unmatched.

For this shoot I worked with the lovely Gina from Stars and Lito from Scout as models. My stylist was the amazing Jenn Bonnett. I could not be happier with the outfits she selected. A lot of thought needs to go into sports fitness clothing selection as there is not much room for error.

Check out the images from the shoot below.

Three ways to de-stress from your work week - from a top san francisco lifestyle fashion and sports fitness fashion photographer

You're exhausted, you work far more than the 40 hour week, you feel like you can't take it anymore. Believe it or not, exercise is really going to help you out. Here in San Francisco we a lucky to have so many wonderful places to get outside and shake out that stress. I had the opportunity to photograph Michelle Lew Libay a coach for the San Francisco Marathon training program Run 365 on a cozy socked in with fog morning down at Ocean Beach. We met at 6am at my apartment, looked over her clothing that we had talked about before the shoot, then head down to the beach. When we arrived, I was so excited to see how cloudy and grey it was. Perfect for running and perfect for photography. We grabbed our clothing and I grabbed my cameras and we head down to the water. I showed Michelle my inspiration images of how I saw the shoot and I was snapping away. Michelle was in such a positive mood, no wonder she is a coach for the marathon. I bet her trainees just love her and her encouragement. Stride after stride Michelle knocked every shot out of the park (or ocean, in this case). top-san-francisco-lifestyle-fashion-and-sports-fitness-fashion-photographer-lizcaruana

So here are my tips to de-stress from your work week.

1. Exercise. Go for a run, a swim, a bike ride. Do something to get your mind off of work. Even if it is just 30 minutes. It will help lift your spirits, and refresh your mind.

top-san-francisco-lifestyle-fashion-and-sports-fitness-fashion-photographer-lizcaruana

2. Meditate. The age old practise of clearing your mind is so valuable, especially if you know you won't be able to get away on a mini break. Give yourself 10 minutes a day in silence to breathe, and practise.

top-san-francisco-lifestyle-fashion-and-sports-fitness-fashion-photographer-lizcaruana

3. Friends. Call a friend, go for a walk, or get a meal together. Talking to someone who is not in your industry really help shed some outside light on things and can help you through the tough times.
